I always loved this tune. The humming at the beginning and the harmony on the line "...over an open field" always give me chills. Not sure if my banjo arrangement captures that same magic but it was a nice exercise and challenge working it out. It's played out of standard tuning but in the key of D.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MoBLTW2YRJ8" width="320" youtube-src-id="MoBLTW2YRJ8"></iframe></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /> <p></p>Devon Wellshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09282065293854395994noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5373738324569015049.post-17109245265246752252021-02-11T22:38:00.002-08:002021-02-11T22:38:37.154-08:00Wildwood Fire Album Release Feb. 13, 2021<p> Come check out the free concert online this Saturday for my band Wildwood Fire's debut album release. A quick sweep of the internet turned up one photo of Elvis holding a banjo which may or may not be fake and, to be honest, I can't recall hearing banjo on any of his recordings (if I'm wrong about this please let me know).<div><br /></div><div>I thought I might bring Elvis a little closer to the banjo with a 5 string arrangement of one of his early hits. This is 'Don't Be Cruel' written by Otis Blackwell, an R&B singer and pianist who penned such hits as 'Great Balls of Fire' for Jerry Lee Lewis and 'Fever' for Peggy Lee. </div><div><br /></div><div>I try to keep the syncopated bass in there as much as possible and leave spaces where things break down to just the bass line for a measure or two.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/o0pv1tAEXBs" width="320" youtube-src-id="o0pv1tAEXBs"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Having trouble getting the video to actually show up in blogger but the link is https://youtu.be/o0pv1tAEXBs</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Devon Wellshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09282065293854395994noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5373738324569015049.post-38661461467211268532020-06-28T23:42:00.001-07:002020-06-28T23:42:30.531-07:00Wildwood FireThanks to everyone who came by the online concert yesterday. The harpsichord solo was fun to do. Probably be useful for someone looking for a solo banjo tune to play at a wedding or anniversary....<div>

A little break I came up with for 'Honeysuckle Rose. Borrowing pretty heavily from mid tempo, up the neck Scruggs breaks (a la 'Don't Get Above Your Raisin').</div>

Was inspired to pick on one of the late Prince's tunes and came up with this. <br />
<br />
Listening back the melody is in a strange place in this version and almost completely obscured but was fun to play...Devon Wellshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09282065293854395994noreply@blogger.com0
